Brawl Machinima tutorial Stuff you need 1. Have a computer (Mac or Pc get a laptop for easy portability if you get a Pc get xp, vista is terrible) 2. Have a capture card (a device that allows you to plug a gaming console into the computer. There are 2 types the internal that you put inside the computer like a motherboard or the external which you plug into the usb) personally I use diamond one touch but do not use it. It doesn't let you scale how big you want the end video to be and it's glitchy. But when you do capture scale the output big. (As big as the site that you are going to submit your video‘s biggest size like Youtube’s HD) 3. Have a wii with a copy of brawl and controllers (wii or GameCube or any mix of them up to 4 total but if you have more it's ok but you won't have to use them all) 4. Have Audacity (a great virus free audio program free to download, can be found under music tab to the left) 5. Have a video editing program (you probably have windows movie maker or iMovie but you should get something else) I use flash but flash is neither meant nor good for video editing, but if I ever wanted to add cartoony characters to my Machinima then that would be an upside but I use Windows movie maker for pre flash editing. I have heard great things about Sony Vegas also you NEED a program that can let you block those pesky score and time meters. (don't forget to become proficient at the program with practice) 6. Have pencil and paper (for writing down script) 7. Have a microphone (for recording voice) 8. OPTIONAL: TV and Blitz box (expensive but instead of playing only on your computer you can run your game on the TV and computer, because capture cards only let you play on your computer, or at least mine does so don't buy the blitz box just yet see if your capture card lets you play on the tv and computer, if you have the cables you can use a line splitter and plug the video feed into both the capture card and the tv) Script Writing 1. Use a popular topic to start out with, if you are an unknown loser then you will want to use a popular topic that everyone is talking about, then people will search about the popular topic and will find your video. An example of this is my video Samus is a girl: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtmQuk8iROg&feature=channel_page Or you could create the brawl machinima equivalent of something popular. An example is my video Red vs. Blue episode 1 in SSBB http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vnY9upeyS8&feature=channel 2. Cram pack jokes into it. If your making a comedy then make a joke at every opportunity but level some breathing room so the viewer won't die from not breathing. 3. Make it complicated if it's an action or mystery or simple if it's a comedy. If it's an action or mystery or other serious machinima then you should make it complicated with lots of twists, but comedies need to be simple or the viewer will say what the heck is this crud? (Censored for your own good) see I took advantage of a joke. Voice acting 1. Make funny voices. I suck at using my real voice but what does work for me is using a fake wacky accent or deep voice. So do what's comfortable. 2. Alter your voice. Voice suck? Need to sound like a baby or fat guy? No problem! Digitally alter your voice to be high or low or robotic. 3. Put spaces between sounds. If you don’t itwillsoundlikethis. 4. Delete your mouse clicking noise (when you press the mouse to stop the recording you can hear the mouse click). You click don't want to click hear a click clicking noise click after every click line. 5. You don't have to record a line in 1 take. You can record one part of the line in one take and the rest in another. 6. Keep it clean. Try not to use swears unless you really want to. Pre Recording Brawl
1. Do whatever you want to be recorded (don't record yet that is done in replays) a tip is to see how long a sound or line is and to the action that correspond for said amount. 2. Set the time to 3 minutes but stop when the time is 6 seconds or the footage is obtained (you don’t want to hear 5! 4! 3! 2! 1! GAME! During the machinima) 3. Moves can used to express emotion. Take an example from Shippiddge. When his character, Super64, exclaims SUPER64! He does a Mario tornado (in the original and SSBM it’s down B but in Brawl it’s down A in the air) you can do this with a lot of stuff to make dialog less boring. 4. Remove the music. go to options then go to sound and move the slider all the way to the left. This makes it so the music won't be skipping. Recording Brawl 1. Use replays to record. Unless you want to do game play footage DON’T record mid match. (To save a replay press a certain button on your controller at the end of the match). 2. Always use the “player follow” camera option. That’s when the camera follows a player and not the whole battlefield. If you don’t do this your characters will have a P1, P2, P3, or P4 icon above their head unless you use hacks. 3. DON’T TILT/PAN THE CAMERA!!!! This means that you shouldn’t turn the camera. The only time this is good is when you are setting up a shot. You can zoom for dramatic effect though. 4. USE A GAMECUBE OR CLASSIC CONTROLLER!!!! This is for better Control over the camera. 5. Use multiple camera angles. This is a no brainer especially to let them know who’s talking (camera on the speaker). 6. Shoot the same shot from multiple angles. This way you can see which one you like. Editing 1. Edit things together. It doesn’t matter if you have 2 shots that you want to merge. Find a point where they are almost the same then put them next to each other. 2. Save the file in as much good quality and as close to the site’s HD dimensions as possible. Releasing 1. There are so many video sharing websites but I recommend Machinima.com and Youtube.com because they are free and are popular (plus if you put it on machinima.com and it’s good enough then they will put it on their YouTube account which hundreds of thousands will see in one day. They might even pay you to make machinimas for them.) Well that’s about it. Good luck, AIRYman50 machinimator.
